When you go to Gruene, Texas, it’s almost a certainty that you’ll need to grab a meal. There is no “fast food” in Gruene, and that’s a good thing. It’s a small town with an interesting history, cute shops, and good dining. The commercial hustle and bustle is down the road in New Braunfels (thank you very much – except we do like Buc-ee’s!). Gruene is home to the Gruene Dance Hall and that location is famous because of John Travolta and many country music stars. If you have seen the movie “Michael” you might recall the dance scene where Travolta’s character, a fallen angel – Michael – weaves a spell over the women at the dance hall amid jealous patrons and of course, a fight ensues. Those scenes were filmed at the Gruene Dance Hall and our dining experience happens across the street at “Mozie’s”.
Mozie’s is a long, thin building with a long bar and seating. It is definitely “come as you are” casual dining with a lunch menu that features meat-packed sandwiches, fish tacos, burgers, and fries. The staff is courteous and efficient with friendly faces and good service. Corinne enjoyed the Fish Tacos and I had the Big Dog and skinny fries. While I enjoyed my iced tea with simple syrup, Corinne sipped a Lavander Lemonade with Tito’s Vodka.
Our food was promptly served. My Big Dog was a 1/2-pound all-beef dog smothered in sauerkraut. Fortunately, I did forgo the jalapeno mustard! Corinne’s Fish Tacos were tasty and delicious, and the three tacos were amply stuffed with goodness. Her only regret was that the flour tortilla was not doubled. Sometimes single tortillas aren’t enough to keep the taco’s shape and the meal gets messy. The avocado and pico were very fresh and tasty.
Overall, we’d give Mozie’s a 4.5 -star rating out of 5. The great atmosphere, friendly service, and delicious food made our late lunch something special. After dining, we walked around Gruene and even took a stroll to the Gruene River for some photography and to walk off that great lunch. Mozie’s, we’ll be back!
